Hi, Steve: re. the steering wheel adaptor, it might be an idea to contact Mike Knapman, longstanding Club member, who has a myriad spares secreted around his house and lock-ups.

Mike’s contact details can be found in the Club Yearbook.

    Hope this helps!

I suppose it depends on what shape and dimensions make up the battery compartment, Ben. I’ve a big space just at the front of the engine bulkhead and l went to Halfords and got a biggish battery that fitted the space and doesn’t foul the bonnet above. £92.http://allardownersclub.org/wp-content/uploads/hm_bbpui/5414/dilrqri1754tfzqlwcfj2e25xii72d2f.jpg

    • Thanks for these, Geoff. Phenomenal work, bearing in mind your and Jon’s awareness of the need to retain the history, 60 yr-old mods, to strengthen where necessary and get all the datum points realigned. Looking forward to seeing more pics as the repairs continue. Great stuff! Tim.

Interestingly, DVLA have LKX 520 as having a cubic capacity of 3,622 – which would suggest either an earlier American flathead – or a Ford Pilot – which it cannot be, since the cooling outlets for the hoses up to the rad. are right at the front of the cylinder heads… more thoughts, anyone? Tim.

In my experience, Russell, some (perhaps many) Ford Pilot 3.6l engines weren’t provided with the luxury of an oil filter – certainly mine hasn’t one. There is a take-off plug for a tap/piping at the n/s rear of the block if you wish to fit and mount a filter canister, but all l do is change the engine oil every year/1500 mls, whichever comes sooner.  Hth, Tim.

Ron: l now have some details of the mystery  Mercury-engined ‘Allard’ Special, currently for sale at Bicester Motor Shed.

    Chassis no is H 54 204, and
Engine no: 51221 2. The vendor has owned the special for ‘a few years’, the previous owner owner having had the car for 68 years before that. It is said that during that lengthy period, the car has always had the identity of a ‘special’.

Hope this helps; regardless of its i/d, from the photos at least, the car looks really nice, to me. Tim.

Thanks, Ron; l’ll await with interest, any further news. I’ve also Emailed Bicester Motor Shed, to see if they’ll offer more info. Tim.

You got the right man, Roger. David Cornwallis did my Marles ‘box rebuild and it’s a superb job. Not cheap, but great value for the money. Good luck, Tim.

Hi, Russell: for me, always Halfords or Duckhams 20/50; it’s what l put in all my old cars. As for sump capacity, my engine is a 3.6 Ford Pilot, and l think it’s ca. 4.5ltrs. Hth, Tim.

That sounds great, Peter; l’ll look forward to seeing you, plus P1, at Dalemain. Altho my Special has significant elements of P1 about it, l’ve never actually sat in a saloon before, so it’ll be interesting to have a look at the windscreen mechanism. Cheers, Tim.
