ParticipantRussell there are kits made in the USA by ” Mr Gasket”. They for lhd boxes but with a bit of ingenuity can be adapted to rhd boxes. David Kinsella had in in his P1 sold by Mathewsons earlier this year.

Mark Wilkinson (the kitchen designer) installed an automatic box in his M type because he had damaged his leg in an accident on a motorcycle.

I notice the seller of the RKS, was gilkes so he is possibly Roger Gilkes, friend of AOC member Tony Batt .
I bought a P1 from Roger, AEN 393 which was a combination of two P1’s from the Manchester area. He used to work for the Bristol Bus Company.

I don’t think you will be able to purchase the fuel filler grommet from the Complete Automobilist as they are ” special” to Allards. The ones from a pre-war Ford V8 look similar but they are not. The only place to obtain reproduction ones are from a bloke called Mike Knapman! The other items on your shopping list you should have no problem. In one of your earlier posts you said the roof rain gutters had been sealed with clear silicon. As you suspect the gutters are just strips of aluminium formed into a channel and tacked to the roof. The silcon is a way of preventing ingress of water which will rot the wood and the edges of the head lining.

ParticipantRussell, the door hinges are usually (!) attached to the B post by countersunk set screws with nuts to the rear. You may have to remove a trim panels by the rear seat to get access to the rear of the B post.
You do not however have to remove the doors to inspect their interiors
You should be able to get access to the internals of the door by removing the door cards which are secured to the doors by dome headed slotted screws in cup washers.
To remove the window winder handles and the internal door handle press the sprung bezels between the handles and the door cards bezels towards the cards and tap out the pins which will be revealed.10 June 2021 at 11:00 PM #6087Michael Knapman

Your question has been answered but it might be worth adding that the cheap ones are made in China for the Ford flathead. I don’t know yet how good their quality is.
The radiators in the Ford flatheads and Ford Pilot are much taller than Allard ones. Maybe that is one of the reason why Allards tend to overheat.
Also there are two heights of Allard rads. The tallest was used in the P1 and the shorter one in the K2, J2 , J2X.10 June 2021 at 10:52 PM #6086Michael Knapman

For sake of good record the Le Mans body was fitted to a few J2X’s not the JR.
The all-enveloping “Le Mans” body became necessary when the ACF banned open wheeled cars .24 February 2021 at 3:13 PM #5792Michael Knapman
ParticipantThe vacuum hole is used to lift the friction brake on the Passenger car version of the Lucas distributor. The Passenger type dizzy (as opposed to the Commercial type) has a rotating disc inside it against the edge of which a light spring loaded leather disc bears. This to to prevent the dizzy over advancing. However when the engine accelerates and creates a high vacuum on the inlet manifold the vacuum reduces the pressure on the disc.
The vacuum port is between cylinders 7 and 8 so if being used for a diagnostic vacuum gauge test it will only indicate the condition in those two cylinders.Ford flatheads have no timing marks. The Ford recommendation is that the engines be tuned to achieved the highest vacuum reading.

The P1 has lots of space around the engine and air can exit under the front wings so P1s don’t tend to suffer so badly with overheating, in fact when I had a P1 on the road I could manage without a fan most of the time. The exception was when returning home to London in heavy traffic. Then I would fit the fan belt on loosely and although it slipped it sufficed.

ParticipantModern cooling systems often have a vent valve so that air can be vented off when the water when the thermostat is open. The vent valves need to be at the highest point in the coolant system.
With some ingenuity it should be possible to fit a vent valve to an Allard.
Alternatively one way of “bleeding” air from an Allard cooling system is to remove the radiator cap and bring the engine to operating temperature. When all the bubbles of air have ceased, top up the radiator then tighten the cap and o not remove it until necessary. Each time the cap is removed the bleeding process has to be repeated.24 February 2021 at 2:34 PM #5789Michael Knapman

ParticipantWhatever brand of coil you buy it needs to be one for an un-ballasted ignition supply i.e. it will operated at full 12 volts. Ballasted coils are made to work at either 9 or 7 v. They only operate at 12 v whilst starting

ParticipantIf a filter is fitted unless the block is modified it is only a partial filter. The modification to the oil passages turns it into a full flow filter (all the output from the pump is filtered).

At the top of the splines there should be a small plain spring circlip in a groove. If missing it could be replaced by an external circlip. -
