Did Sydney use Ford steering columns with a 4 degree taper and keyway at the wheel end?

      Thanks, chaps.

Should also mention that the column is hollow to receive the stator tube which carries the multi core cable from the multi function steering wheel centre.

While on the subject of steering columns… my P1 appears to have the extendable spring-like collar so the steering wheel can be pulled towards the driver or pushed away.  However I can’t see what stops the steering wheel from just coming off in your hands – which is exactly what happened when I tried it.

Thankfully I wasn’t driving (I’m a LONG way off that point) but curious to know.  I imagined there would be some kind of collar, but whatever it is, it’s missing from mine.

      Ben
At the top of the splines there should be a small plain spring circlip in a groove. If missing it could be replaced by an external circlip.

Ahhh that’ll be it.  I did notice that small groove but didn’t think it would be sufficient.  I’ll dig something out when I get to that stage.

Neil, Marles steering boxes with solid columns and taper keyways
were used on pretty much all of the competition cars (J2/2X/R and anything
else that didn’t use a steering wheel horn push/indicator switch). The hollow/splined shafts were used on the road cars.
      Best wishes

      Thanks for that Roger.

Are you able to say what the taper angle is, please?

      Neil,

Further to my earlier posting, and having removed my J2X steering wheel,

the steering wheel on that is actually solid/non taper with a clamp bolt

thru the steering wheel boss. The prewar car has a solid taper/key with an end nut.

Hopefully you will presented with no further alternatives!
