Radiator hoses

I currently have straight hoses at the top of my radiator (at each end of the metal ones), but the bottom hoses are flexible ones (with the ridges). Is there any reason for this, or can I just replace the lot by buying a metre length of the correct diameter straight hose and chopping it up as necessary?
